Our Mission
Oasis Of Vine City will strive to educate the community on the importance of healthy eating, regular exercise, and consistent medical checkups to ensure our residents maintain keen minds and healthy bodies.
Organization Overview
Oasis Of Vine City is a non-profit organization advocating for the hungry, needy, and politically under-represented members of our extended family. We have been fulfilling this mission for more than 20 years, encouraging others to aid us in doing so.
The beauty of Oasis Of Vine City as an organization lies on our members. Both kids and seniors work in unity to create a model community, helping others who are in dire need of food and other resources.
Our History
The Oasis was envisioned 20 years ago by Bishop Dexter L. Johnson Senior Pastor of Higher Ground Empowerment Center Church. It was originally created to help the hungry, the needy and the addicted. As the needs became greater, we began to specialize in the Clothes Closet, when people in the community or just on the street had a need for clothing. Then, we developed a food pantry when people had an immediate need for food, or we even managed to provide temporary shelter when persons came to us with no money/income.
Under the visionary drive of Bishop Dexter L. Johnson, the Oasis of Vine City came forth through his heartfelt desire to offer to the neighborhood and the community services that would cause the people to have a one-stop shop right in their back yard. In 1994, Dexter L. Johnson was elected Senior Pastor of the Higher Ground Empowerment Center, formally known as Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, in the Vine City Community. He began to concentrate much of his efforts and concern to that area. Thus, in 1998, his vision for the Oasis was launched with a four-fold intent:
- A Multi-Generational Center was first and foremost envisioned because of the need of family. The center was to be comprised of a full basketball court, a swimming pool, classrooms, large multi-purpose room, a bowling alley, and much more. This Center would house and provide much of the services that people needed in the community. We will also house an Adult Day Care as well as after-school programs.
- Youth and Young Adults Facility. This portion of the facility would support runaways and house youth and young adults and get them off the street to release them from being pimped or prostituted. Creating a safe haven. We would be working in conjunction with the courts, placement facilities, covenant houses and other types of shelters that would aide our children from present-day harm.
- Re-Entry Program. This program would help the incarcerated when they are released from prison and need a bridge to get back into society. The program would have negotiated with companies to train and hire our people, leaving them with a skill/skill set to become employed and produce an income for a decent living.
- Job Readiness. The Oasis has partnered with Atlanta Workforce Development and assisted people in becoming employed again. Hand in hand with Atlanta Workforce, GA Department of Labor, Westside Works the community will be impacted like never before and an economic impact is imparted into Vine City by the Oasis.
We are just an organization working to meet the needs of people 24/7. Our modus operandi is expedience, immediate and economically and socially. We will expedite the matter to the top of the list to assist community residents, family/members in need.
